Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bernhard Steger – Expert in Cornea, Lens and Eyelid Surgery

When modern eye surgery combines scientific expertise, surgical experience, and personalised patient care, Assoc. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Bernhard Steger represents this approach through both his academic work at the Medical University of Innsbruck and his clinical practice at the Brixsana Private Clinic in Brixen/Bressanone, South Tyrol. His work combines university-based medicine with individual patient care and modern ophthalmic surgery.

From Innsbruck to Liverpool — and Back to Specialised Eye Surgery

Prof. Steger completed both his medical studies and specialist training in ophthalmology and optometry at the Medical University of Innsbruck. He subsequently expanded his surgical training through a one-year fellowship at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. His professional background combines University education, international surgical training, and clinical subspecialisation, with a particular focus on modern corneal and lens surgery.

Work at the Medical University of Innsbruck

At the University Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry in Innsbruck, Prof. Steger is involved in clinical research and ocular surgery, covering several areas from complex corneal procedures such as keratoplasty and stem cell transplantation, cataract surgery, and eyelid surgery.

His expertise in both corneal and eyelid surgery is particularly relevant for the Lid Summit, as the cornea, ocular surface, and eyelids are closely connected in both visual function and surgical healing. In parallel, he also contributes his surgical expertise at the Brixsana Private Clinic in Brixen/Bressanone, South Tyrol.

Modern ophthalmic surgery today means more than surgical precision alone. It combines scientific expertise, innovative techniques, and personalized care for every individual patient.

Innovation and Research: Cornea Dome Lens

In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Steger is involved in research and innovation projects in the field of ocular surface imaging and analysis. He has received multiple science and innovation grants and prizes, among them the science2business award in 2019 for the Cornea Dome Lens project.

Eye Surgery in Brixen/Bressanone: Personal Care and Modern Diagnostics

At the Brixsana Private Clinic in Brixen/Bressanone, South tyrol, Prof. Steger offers ophthalmic examinations, advanced diagnostics, consultations, and surgical treatment. His focus is on providing individualised treatment planning, and structured patient care from initial consultation to surgery and follow-up. His clinical work in South Tyrol complements his University role in Innsbruck by combining specialised ophthalmic medicine with a personal clinical setting.

Expertise of Great Value for the Lid Summit

The Lid Summit brings together specialists in corneal surgery as well as functional, reconstructive, and aesthetic eyelid surgery. We are pleased to welcome Prof. Steger as an instructor with expertise in both fields. His work reflects an integrated approach to ophthalmic surgery that considers the cornea, ocular surface, eyelids, and visual function as interconnected structures rather than isolated subspecialties.
