Where Reconstruction Meets Artistry: The Surgical Philosophy of Univ.-Prof. Dietmar Ulrich

Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dietmar Ulrich

When it comes to modern plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dietmar Ulrich is one of the defining figures in the German-speaking world. Since November 2025, he has led the University Clinic for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in Innsbruck, bringing together international experience, scientific expertise, and surgical precision.

His profile is particularly relevant for the Lid Summit: the eyelid region sits at the intersection of function, aesthetics, reconstruction, and facial surgery — exactly the connection that defines Prof. Ulrich's work.

Academic Career and International Experience

Prof. Ulrich completed his medical degree at the University of Kiel, followed by clinical and research positions at renowned centres in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. Over the course of his career, he specialised in plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, with a particular focus on complex reconstructions, facial surgery, and modern operative planning.

Prior to his appointment in Innsbruck, he held leading positions at university institutions where he shaped both clinical care and research and teaching. This international perspective now flows into his work at the Medical University of Innsbruck.

Leading the Innsbruck University Clinic for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery

With his assumption of clinic leadership in Innsbruck, Prof. Ulrich represents an advancement of plastic surgery at university level. The clinic combines reconstructive procedures, aesthetic surgery, microsurgical techniques, and innovative treatment approaches.

A particular focus is placed on the connection between function and aesthetics. Especially in the face — and in particular around the eyelids — a good outcome extends well beyond mere shape correction. What matters is symmetry, protective function, tissue preservation, scar management, expression, and long-term stability.

Expertise in Facial, Eyelid, and Aesthetic Surgery

The eye and eyelid region is one of the most sensitive areas of plastic and aesthetic surgery. Even small changes can significantly alter facial expression, appearance, and how a person is perceived. At the same time, the eyelids serve important medical functions: they protect the eye, support the moisture balance of the ocular surface, and contribute substantially to visual comfort.

Prof. Ulrich's surgical approach is therefore particularly relevant for the Lid Summit: he unites reconstructive thinking with aesthetic standards. This approach is decisive in procedures that must not only look convincing, but also perform reliably in functional terms.

The eyelid is where function and aesthetics are inseparable. Every decision in this region — how much tissue to preserve, how to restore natural movement, where to place a scar — requires both surgical precision and an understanding of the whole face. That is the standard we pursue.

Reconstruction, Innovation, and Modern Imaging

Another focus of Prof. Ulrich's work lies in the further development of modern reconstructive techniques. This includes precise surgical planning, tissue-sparing approaches, and the use of new technologies — particularly modern imaging and digital planning such as 3D analysis and the objective documentation of surgical outcomes.

These methods are becoming increasingly important in eyelid and facial surgery, enabling better planning, transparent outcome analysis, and even more individualised patient care.

Science, Teaching, and Academic Exchange

As a university professor, Dietmar Ulrich combines clinical practice with research and education. Plastic surgery thrives on continuous development: new techniques, better materials, interdisciplinary collaboration, and rigorous analysis of treatment outcomes — as reflected in his published work on patient-reported outcomes after upper blepharoplasty and satisfaction and well-being following periorbital surgery.

For young physicians, this combination of surgical excellence and academic teaching is particularly valuable. At the same time, it strengthens the scientific exchange between disciplines such as ophthalmology, plastic surgery, dermatology, ENT, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
