Assoc.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Gerald Schmidinger is one of the leading corneal surgeons in the German-speaking world. As Deputy Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna — one of the largest eye clinics in Europe — and Director of the Vienna Cornea Bank, he brings world-class expertise in corneal and anterior segment surgery to the Lid Summit.

A Career at Europe's Largest Eye Clinic

Born in Salzburg, Prof. Schmidinger studied medicine at the University of Vienna and completed his specialist training at the Medical University of Vienna, becoming a board-certified specialist in ophthalmology and optometry in 2008. He completed his habilitation in 2012 and was appointed Associate Professor in 2014. For several years he worked as a consultant surgeon in Switzerland.

Today he holds several of the most significant positions in Austrian corneal medicine:

Modern Lamellar Transplantation: DMEK and DALK

Where transplantation is unavoidable, Prof. Schmidinger practises and teaches the most advanced, tissue-sparing techniques available. Modern corneal surgery has moved decisively away from full-thickness (penetrating) keratoplasty toward selective, layer-specific transplantation:

He has also been involved in humanitarian ophthalmic programmes in Africa, bringing surgical care to underserved regions.

From 2021 he served as President of the Viennese Ophthalmological Society (WOG), and he acts as a scientific reviewer for leading international journals including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
